Lodge payments

Set up Stripe for your lodge.

Who does it, what to have ready and which documents Stripe accepts.

Who does what

Settle this before anyone opens the form.

01

Whose account is it?

The lodge or chapter, not any one person.

  • Stripe's UK type is unincorporated non-profit: non-profits and charities run as an unincorporated association or trust.
  • Lodge Dashboard sets this type, and Stripe asks you to confirm it.
  • A charitable company limited by guarantee is a different Stripe type. Speak to us before you start.
  • Payments run on the lodge's own Stripe account and pay out to its bank. Lodge Dashboard never holds the money.

02

Who can start it?

An Admin or Secretary on Lodge Dashboard.

  • Only those two roles can press Set up Stripe.
  • A Treasurer doing it needs one of those roles first.
  • Another Admin or Secretary can pick up a set-up left unfinished.
  • How creating and connecting works.
03

Who is the representative?

The person who submits the application.

  • They confirm they have “full authority to legally bind” the lodge.
  • They give their personal details and pass a photo ID and selfie check.

Our note: Stripe names no lodge office for this. We suggest the Secretary or Treasurer, agreed with the lodge first.

04

Who else must be named?

The people who run the lodge. Stripe calls them directors.

  • Stripe's test: a board member or “any other senior person responsible for managing the business”.
  • Stripe checks directors for non-profits, usually from the details you enter. It asks for a document if it can't.
  • No owners to list. Non-profits name directors instead.

Our note: Stripe names no lodge offices here either. We suggest the Worshipful Master, Secretary and Treasurer (First Principal, Scribe E and Treasurer in a chapter).

Stripe's list also has articles, certificates of incorporation, Companies House documents and school inspection reports, for companies and schools.

When officers change

The account stays. The names move on.

New representative

  • In the Stripe Dashboard, an administrator opens Settings › Business details.
  • Edit the current representative and choose Remove as Account Representative.
  • Nominate the new person within 7 days, or payouts may be paused.
  • Option not there? Stripe offers it to some accounts only, so ask Stripe support.

Our note: Expect Stripe to check the new person's ID. Stripe's support team confirmed this to us.

Stripe: Changing the representative

Team and new officers

  • Whoever creates the account is its Super Administrator.
  • Invite your successor: Settings › Team › Add member, choose a role, Send invites. Invites expire after 10 days.
  • Only a Super Administrator can make someone else one, and only the owner can transfer ownership. Do this before you stand down.
  • Remove anyone who no longer needs access.

Our note: Update the directors in the Stripe Dashboard after Installation.
